<hi style=afpcap>The art of air refuelling is today a commonplace event with fighter, bomber and transport aircraft routinely having their operating range extended through this method. However during the late '20s aerial refuelling was still in its infancy, with an exercise being conducted in 1929 to prove the concept. The Douglas Aircraft Company modified a C-1 with a hose pipe attached to a fuel tank. The C-1 was flown slightly above the Fokker receiver, with the hose lowered to the awaiting crewman. </hi>
